The grieving son who committed a murder-suicide that left five people dead in a Long Island home on Sunday while mourning the death of his mother has been identified by neighbors as Joseph DeLucia Jr.
DeLucia Jr. was furious over the death of his 95-year-old mother, Theresa DeLucia, and the impending sale of the Syosset home where the two lived when he opened fire inside the Wyoming Court home, killing four victims inside before shooting himself outside, police and neighbors told The Washington Post.
“We heard a high-pitched scream, it was Joe's scream, then a gunshot. I was shocked. I never thought something like that would happen,” her neighbor Sandy Landsman, 73, told the Post.
DeLucia Jr., who worked as an emergency medical technician according to his social media posts, suffered from mental health issues that were exacerbated by the death of his mother last week, according to neighbors.
“His mother died last week. The siblings were preparing to sell the house. We heard that he was very upset about it. He didn't know where to go, he had spent his whole life there. One of the siblings said she would take care of him and bring him home. That obviously didn't sound very good to him,” added Landsmann.
Nassau County police have not yet identified the four victims killed.
