A cat filmed by its owner sleeping soundly as if “paying the bills” has gone viral on Instagram.
In a post shared on the social media platform by user @bfscats earlier this month, a cat can be seen sleeping comfortably in her owner's bed as if she is tired from a long day at work. She is hugging her stuffed fish and being petted by her owner as she sleeps.
“It’s hard to resist Simbah’s kiss,” says the caption of the video.
The Instagram video quickly went viral on the platform, garnering over 73.4 million views and 6.8 million likes to date.
Newsweek has reached out to @bfscats for comment via Instagram comments. We were unable to verify the details of the case.
According to Britannica, cats sleep an average of 15 hours a day, but some may extend this to 20 hours, especially if they are older cats or kittens.
Cats are predators by nature, and prowl and jump around can exhaust them. They inherited these traits from their wildcat ancestors, who needed to hunt to survive and recharge their batteries.
“And not only are they predators, they are crepuscular predators, meaning that for them, the starting light comes on during the twilight hours when their prey, rodents and birds alike, are active. The rest of the day, cats sleep,” Britannica adds.
Newsweek I've written about cats' sleeping positions before and found that sometimes you can better understand what they're feeling by the way they sleep.
If they sleep curled up, it's because they want to conserve their body heat, and if they cover their eyes with their paws, it's because they don't want to be disturbed. When cats sleep in the loaf position, they're trying to get some sleep while still being ready for action. This could mean that while they're comfortable around their owner, they're still anxious around them.
