On July 30, the Cleveland Guardians signed starting pitcher Alex Cobb from the San Francisco Giants to add an experienced pitcher to their weakened starting lineup.
The trade between the two organizations initially called for Cobb to go to the Guardians in exchange for RHP Jacob Bresnahan and a player to be named.
That deal is now complete, as Fansided's Robert Murray reports that the PTBNL in that deal is Cleveland prospect Nate Furman.
The 23-year-old Furman was selected as the fourth overall pick by Cleveland in the 2022 draft and began the season with the Lake County Captains (High-A). After just nine games, he was promoted to the Akron RubberDucks (Double-A).
The infielder has played both second and third base this season, but his true potential is on offense. Furman has a slash line of .294/.391/.438 and an OPS of .829, including three doubles, two triples and seven home runs this season.
It makes sense that Cleveland would be willing to part with one of its infielders. The system is already loaded at that position and the Guardians have their future center field under contract with Andres Gimenez and Travis Bazzana.
Looking at Cleveland's side of this trade, Cobb's early return has been promising. The 36-year-old has made two starts and has five earned runs in 10.1 innings, but he is back on the injured list with a broken fingernail.
Now that the trade between the Guardians and the Giants is complete, we can just hope that Cobb comes back healthy and can lead the Guardians well into October.
