TRINIDAD, Colorado (KKTV) – A man accused of giving fentanyl to a child was caught in a basement crawl space while trying to hide from police.
Randy Sanchez is currently facing multiple drug charges for allegedly selling drugs to a 13-year-old girl in Trinidad.
Trinidad police said they obtained an arrest warrant for Sanchez last week and went to a house on Aguilar Court to take him into custody.
“Officers spotted Sanchez in front of 104 Aguilar Court,” Trinidad police said in a press release. “As officers approached, Sanchez ran into [the house].”
Police repeatedly asked Sanchez to surrender peacefully, but he allegedly ignored them. Officers then received a tip that Sanchez may have fled the house and run into the house next door.
“Officers obtained verbal consent to search 106 Aguilar, which they did twice. Officers deployed a noise flash distraction device to scare Sanchez out of the residence, but this elicited no response,” police said.
Officers turned their attention back to the original house and increased their attempts to get Sanchez to come out.
“Chemical weapons were then dispatched to 104 Aguilar Court, after which officers received no response to the chemical weapons. Officers entered the home at 5:35 p.m. and conducted a thorough search but were unable to locate anyone inside. A drone was then deployed to the attic and basement of 104 Aguilar Court, which were not safe for officers to enter. No one was found in those locations,” the police department said.
Police went back to the house next door and got permission to search it again. This time, one of the officers discovered a hidden door to the crawl space in the basement – where they found Sanchez.
Eight hours after Sanchez allegedly first fled from police, he was taken to the Las Animas County Jail.
