Man convicted of murdering police officer in Kentucky learns his sentence

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – A man convicted in the death of a Kentucky police officer has learned his sentence.

Casey Byrd was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Laurel Circuit Court on Monday afternoon.

Byrd was convicted by a Warren County jury earlier this month on murder, drunken driving and other charges in connection with the October 2022 death of London police officer Logan Medlock.

The trial was moved to Bowling Green because people in Laurel County had extensive knowledge of the case. A jury deliberated for nearly seven hours on August 8 before returning unanimous guilty verdicts on murder, driving under the influence and other charges in Byrd's trial.

Byrd testified at trial, telling the courtroom that he had planned to stay at a friend's house after a night of drinking, but got a message from a woman he wanted to meet and decided to drive to her place instead. Evidence showed that he was driving twice as fast as 35 miles per hour and ran a red light when he crashed into Medlock's patrol car shortly after his shift began. Medlock was known for pulling over drunk drivers, and even said before he drove off that night that he hoped to find another one.

The jury had recommended that Byrd be sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder, and the judge confirmed that recommendation at the official sentencing. Byrd has been incarcerated at the Laurel County Correctional Center since his arraignment.
