Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gives uninspiring update on contract extension talks with Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys are entering a crucial 2024 season. Dallas was embarrassed by Green Bay in the playoffs last year and doesn't want to repeat that in the fall. This could be the Cowboys' last chance to make it deep into the playoffs with the current roster.

The biggest source of uncertainty in Dallas is the future of franchise QB Dak Prescott. His contract runs beyond this season, and we haven't received much promising news on potential extensions.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked for an update on quarterback Dak Prescott's contract status on Wednesday and gave only a lukewarm response.

“It's going to stay the way it was,” Jones said, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.

“It would be easy to say, 'If you haven't seen it by now, you haven't seen it yet,'” Jones continued. “I'm a huge fan of Dak and appreciate all the great things that we all know are there. And I appreciate his work ethic more than anything else here. I can't tell you how proud I am that we have him this year to start this season. … When you look at a situation, you also have to weigh, 'OK, what are the consequences of the other side of the coin?' And so Dak's situation right now, to me, from my perspective, has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott as quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.”

This is not an inspiring update for Cowboys fans. Jones seems to think it would be irresponsible to extend Prescott's contract after the 2024 season.

Cowboys fans can hope that a strong 2024 season will change Jones' mind.

Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons suggests CeeDee Lamb's big payday should lead to more money for cornerbacks

Dak Prescott isn't the only player Dallas had to consider extending in the offseason.

Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons are all set to extend their contracts in the near future. Lamb was the first to sign a new contract, signing a four-year, $136 million deal on Monday.

Parsons said Lamb's contract and the contracts of other wide receivers should result in cornerbacks receiving more money as well.

“I think it's time for a jump in the cornerback market. I mean, all these receivers are making over $30 million a year and there are guys on islands because in the Cover 3 we have to cover those guys,” Parsons said, via Bleacher Report. “I think it's time for a jump in the cornerback market because these wide receivers are making over $30 million. Look at the offensive tackles. Offensive tackles are making close to $20-30 million and the best pass rushers are making between $25-35 million. So why wouldn't the cornerback market make a jump like the receiver market, to be honest?”

Parsons' logic is easy to understand here. However, money is limited in the NFL. Each team has a limited salary cap, so it can be difficult for each position group to get what they feel is appropriate.
