Piscataqua Bridge closed after police kill man, find dead child in car

Police found the body of an 8-year-old child in the car of a man who was shot by police officers on Thursday morning on the Piscataqua River Bridge, a section of Interstate 95 that connects New Hampshire and Maine, closing the main traffic artery from the U.S.-Canadian border to Miami indefinitely.

According to the New Hampshire Department of Justice, officials arrested the man wanted for killing a woman in a home in Troy, New Hampshire, about 100 miles west of the bridge.

After officers shot the man, the body of an 8-year-old boy who had been fatally shot was found in the car on the bridge.

A local news crew reportedly heard gunshots on the bridge shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday.

The shooting prompted authorities to close both directions of traffic across the bridge on Interstate 95. As of Thursday morning, there is still no firm timetable for reopening and the public should avoid the area, Maine State Police said via Facebook. The bridge, about 60 miles north of Boston, connects Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine.

Authorities believe there is no danger to the public. State police and the attorneys general of both states are working together to investigate the incident. The Maine Attorney General's office is also investigating the police-involved shooting.
