It's good to be the king…or whatever you call the team that's at the top of the waiver list.
On Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers announced they had claimed six players following the NFL's first roster cuts. One of the six was cornerback Shemar Bartholomew, who was released by the New York Jets on Tuesday.
As it turned out, the Panthers weren't the only team interested in the 24-year-old defenseman. In fact, he was in high demand.
As NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported this morning, Bartholomew has been claimed by four different teams – the most of any player on yesterday's waivers list. The undrafted rookie has been claimed by the Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.
Bartholomew's impressive summer may have contributed to his popularity. According to Pro Football Focus, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound player allowed no receiving yards on nine attempts in the preseason and posted a passer rating of just 39.6 when targeted – good enough for an 85.2 coverage rating.
Carolina – which has the No. 1 priority in the waiver order – was also able to sign fellow cornerbacks Keenan Isaac and Tariq Castro-Fields, guard Jarrett Kingston, outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff and inside linebacker Jon Rhattigan.
