Chase through several states ends with shootout involving deputy sheriff

COLBERT CO., Alabama (WAFF) – Authorities in Colbert County said a man was flown to the hospital by helicopter after a multi-state police chase ended in an officer-involved shooting.

According to the Colbert County Sheriff's Office, the chase began after the man refused to stop at a police roadblock in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. They say the chase began around midnight Thursday.

During the chase, authorities say the man began firing at the police officers and deputies pursuing him. They say he eventually stopped on Darrel Lane in Leighton and tried to get him to surrender.

However, officers said he shot at them again and they returned fire.

The man was injured and flown by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital. His condition is currently unknown.

Two deputies have been placed on leave while the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigates the shooting. Sheriff Eric Balentine said this is standard practice in all shootings involving deputies.
