Child calls 9-1-1 because mother drives recklessly in Springfield

A 43-year-old mother was taken into custody Monday after her 8-year-old child called 9-1-1 to report the mother's reckless driving to authorities.

According to the Springfield Police Department (SPD), on August 25, police officers became aware of a blue Subaru recklessly running a red light while traveling east on the Beltline toward Springfield.

Officials say the Subaru was reported by an 8-year-old child in the vehicle who reported via 9-1-1 that his mother, identified as 43-year-old Camie Sorensen, was driving recklessly and was “looking for water to drive into.”

An officer was stationed in the gateway area in case the Subaru entered Springfield.

According to the SPD, the Subaru overtook the officer, stopped at a red light and sped away when the officer tried to stop it.

The Subaru continued to drive erratically south on Pioneer Parkway West, police said, weaving dangerously through traffic before coming to an abrupt stop in the middle of the intersection of Pioneer Parkway and Q Street, at which point officers approached the vehicle.

Two police officers from the department took Sorenson into custody while a third officer picked up the 8-year-old, who had called 9-1-1.

According to SPD, Sorensen was booked into the Lane County Jail on the following charges:

  • Reckless driving
  • Escape
  • Reckless endangerment
