Kamala Harris wore one of her favorite outfit combinations alongside Tim Walz during her campaign appearance in Savannah, Georgia on Wednesday. The Democratic presidential candidate paired black Converse sneakers with her pearl and gold necklace by Irene Neuwirth, reviving the viral “Chucks and Pearls” trend she started in 2020.
Harris wore a sleek black suit consisting of a single-breasted blazer with a peak lapel and a breast pocket and matching skinny pants. She completed her look with a small American flag pin.
Harris and Walz will embark on a two-day bus tour of Georgia, a key swing state. On Wednesday, they stopped at Liberty County High School in Hinesville and the Sandfly Bar-B-Q restaurant in Savannah.
One of Harris' favorite pieces is an 18-karat gold pearl necklace by Neuwirth that she wore when she was nominated as the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2020 and in her official White House portrait. A newer version of the piece sells for $18,000 on Neuwirth's website.
During her campaign for President Joe Biden in 2020, Harris famously paired pearls with her black Converse low-tops. She even wore the sneaker on the cover of Vogue.
On Inauguration Day, many women paired Converse shoes with pearls as a tribute to Harris' historic election as vice president. The Facebook group “Wear Pearls On Jan 20th, 2021” contributed to the trend, gathering hundreds of thousands of members in the process. Online, some even coined the date “Chucks and Pearls Day.”
Harris' love of pearls probably dates back to her time as a student at her alma mater, Howard University. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, whose trademark symbol is the pearl.
