Brandon Aiyuk did not participate in the 49ers' practice on Wednesday after receiving medical clearance from the team.
And now the ongoing contract dispute could reach a new, unpleasant level.
Aiyuk reported to training camp this summer but decided to keep a low profile and not participate in any on-field activities as he continues to negotiate a lucrative contract extension with the team. The fifth-year receiver avoided a fine by claiming he was dealing with neck and back injuries. However, now that he has been declared healthy by team doctors, Aiyuk faces disciplinary action for missing mandatory team workouts.
Under the terms of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, after training camp ends, teams can fine players for “unexcused absences,” including walk-throughs, curfews, practices and meetings. Those fines can be as high as $16,009 per missed activity, with the maximum total fine for a single day being $45,769 if a player misses multiple team events. At that point, teams can also suspend players for “conduct detrimental to the team.” (h/t Nick Wagoner of ESPN)
Aiyuk has been on the field regularly throughout training camp, often watching from the sidelines and also participating in team meetings behind the scenes. The disgruntled star also traveled with the 49ers for their final preseason game on Friday against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
While Aiyuk will have to pay a hefty bill over the next few days for the fines he could rack up, that will pale in comparison to the fines star left tackle Trent Williams has racked up while out. The veteran has missed every training camp practice and all three preseason games, amassing more than $4 million in fines, according to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.
It remains to be seen whether the 49ers will take disciplinary action against Aiyuk, but if they do, the already tense situation could reach a new, uncomfortable level.
