Governor offers reward for information in Bladen County murder case

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Governor Roy Cooper's office is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder of a Bladen County woman.

Martha Maxwell was found stabbed to death in her Elizabethtown home on January 20, 1994.

According to investigators, someone broke into Martha's home and stabbed her multiple times in the chest and neck. The autopsy report also states that Martha suffered injuries to her hands, possibly while fending off the attacker.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation, it is still one of the oldest unsolved murder cases in North Carolina.

Governor James B. Hunt Jr. offered a $6,000 reward shortly after the murder. The SBI Cold Case Unit resumed the investigation on January 25, 2021.
