Somehow, fall is here. It's time to break away from the endless summer mentality and welcome amber leaves, roaring fireplaces, and thick knit sweaters. As the seasons change, we decided to revise our fall travel wish lists and consider expert sources for new recommendations.
According to Airbnb's Fall Trends Report, the three U.S. states with the highest percentage of nights spent last fall were North Dakota, Maine, and Massachusetts. Plus, it doesn't hurt to know that Airbnb claims fall is the cheapest time of year with the lowest nightly rates.
These results obviously prompted us to scroll through the app for all of you.
In North Dakota, the most beautiful places we found were the cozy The Hytte Hideout in Mayville, the historic Thorson UnderGround Cabin in Hatton and the modern Downtown Dream House in Bismarck (which is named after Condé Nast Traveller's list of the best Airbnbs).
Great finds in Maine included the Serene A-Frame Cabin on the pond in Oxford, the charming Cabins at Currier Landing in Sedgwick and the hilltop Lake Cabin in the Trees in Winthrop.
Looking through Massachusetts Airbnb rentals, we found the renovated Carriage House with beach permission in Barnstable, the stunning renovated barn with fire pit in Great Barrington, and the creekside Shales Brook Cottage in Becket.
On TikTok, you'll also find plenty of cozy cabins and sleepy retreats that can inspire your next adventure.
To round out your planning, you can find recommendations on Reddit for the best time to visit each state. Reddit users for North Dakota seem to choose September as the time to visit, “when the cottonwood trees turn bright yellow.” Reddit users for Maine say October because “the corn mazes and foliage are usually beautiful then.” In Massachusetts, commenters say mid-October is the best time to “see the leaves in full bloom.”
After exploring these cozy abodes, we can practically hear the rustling of the golden leaves and smell the spicy scent of cinnamon in the air.
