POMPANO BEACH, Florida. – Detectives with the Broward Sheriff's Office are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after responding to a call about a shooting in Pompano Beach Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
According to BSO, the incident was reported near Pier Street and Seabreeze Way.
When paramedics arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds; a woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a man was taken to a nearby hospital where he also died, investigators said.
The aftermath of the incident was captured on cellphone video, showing a man being carried away on a stretcher while a woman's body was hidden under a yellow tarp near a pier.
Additionally, BSO detectives were observed photographing the area and targeting a car parked nearby.
“It just sounded like fireworks exploding,” a witness told Local 10's Janine Stanwood.
An employee at a nearby restaurant said the shooting occurred around 11 a.m., shortly after the visibly upset couple entered a store.
“The woman went out, stormed off and the man followed her – possibly with a bag,” the employee said. “Five seconds later, shots were fired.”
The normally bustling neighborhood was shocked by the violence.
“It's a neighborhood that's normally vibrant and busy, but nothing like this,” said one Pompano Beach resident. “We're devastated. I don't know how to feel right now.”
Investigators have not released the age or identity of the man or woman, and a motive is currently unclear.
