Luxury yacht: Investigations initiated against further crew members of the “Bayesian”

About one and a half weeks after the sinking of the sailing yacht Bayesian off the coast Sicily The Italian prosecutors have expanded their investigations. Investigations are being conducted against two other members of the crew, their lawyer said. An investigation has already been launched against the yacht's New Zealand captain on suspicion of negligent homicide and culpable causing of a shipping accident.

The lawyer said that since last Wednesday, both the engineer responsible for securing the engine room and the sailor who was on watch on the night of the accident have been the focus of investigators. Both had left Italy on Wednesday, and the captain had also left the country.

The three crew members are among the 15 survivors of the shipping accident of the Bayesian am August 19. There were seven deaths, including the well-known British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch (59) and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. With the exception of the ship's cook, the entire crew survived.

Investigators are looking into how the 56-meter-long luxury sailing yacht, which was advertised as “unsinkable” by the Perini Navi shipyard, was able to sink while a nearby sailboat was spared. Authorities said there was severe weather that night, which may have triggered a localized downdraft. Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said that possible responsibilities of the captain, crew and manufacturer are being investigated.
