(CBS) — A 72-year-old Detroit man faces murder charges after police say he shot and killed his wife.

According to Detroit police, George Douglas Thomas is charged with first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

The shooting occurred on July 26 in the 19400 block of Five Points Street. Officers were called to the area for a reported shooting and found a woman who had been shot multiple times. Paramedics took her to the hospital for treatment, but she later succumbed to her injuries.

According to police, Thomas is alleged to have had a gun and shot at her.

The 72-year-old was arraigned on July 30 and will undergo a competency hearing on August 6. Detroit police said a competency hearing is scheduled for November 6.
