No summer without ice cream. Even as a little girl, Lena Sönnichsen from Hamburg measured the success of a holiday by the amount of ice cream she consumed: two ice creams were a good day, three were the perfect one. Now the 45-year-old has turned her favorite dessert into a career. The woman from Blankenese has a trendy ice cream parlor in the South African tourist metropolis Cape Town opened, where tens of thousands of Germans also go on holiday every year.
Why Cape Town? Initially, Sönnichsen's job had repeatedly taken her to the southern tip of South Africa, when she worked as a communications manager for an international accommodation booking platform. She fell in love with the city, which is known for its high quality of life and first-class gastronomy, and wanted to live there longer. What started as a joke – “I'll open an ice cream parlor” – developed into a concrete idea that Sönnichsen systematically implemented.
So Sönnichsen fulfilled his dream of owning his own ice cream parlor
She worked in an ice cream parlor in Berlin for a summer. This was followed by a course at Koch's ice cream school in Werl am Rhein. In February, Sönnichsen found a shop in a good location in the city center of Cape Town – and decided to make her dream come true. “I love the product and everything it stands for,” she says. Ice cream is a small moment of joy in life, an everyday luxury that reminds us of childhood, holidays and summer.
The first customers seem to enjoy it on opening day. “My wife and I are huge ice cream fans. When we read about the ice cream parlor on Instagram, we immediately jumped in the car,” says Cape Town resident Brent Smith. “There are some flavors here that I haven't seen anywhere else.”
Blueberry mascarpone, marzipan pear or gin and tonic ice cream
The ice cream flavors at “Tadaa!” are creative and hand-made, using only natural ingredients. Instead of mint oil or artificial flavors, for example, there is only fresh mint. Behind the counter, unusual flavors tempt you, such as liquorice-white chocolate, blueberry-mascarpone, marzipan-pear, rice pudding with cherries or basil. For adults, there are also alcoholic ice cream flavors such as gin and tonic. One with wine will be added later.
