Shooting threat delays 2nd half of Andrews-Georgetown game | Sport

ANDREWS – One year ago, a shooting in a parking lot ended the Georgetown-Andrews football game at halftime.

This did not happen in the return match on August 30, but a threat of violence delayed the game.

With Andrews leading 30-3 at halftime, the start of the second half was delayed after Georgetown received a shootout threat at Webber Rowell Stadium, said Scott Durham, Andrews' football coach and athletic director.

“She [Georgetown] “They just came out and said they were told to stay in the locker room because there was a risk of a shootout in the third quarter,” he said. “And both principals came out and agreed that we would just go ahead and finish the game.”

Tommy Adams, interim coach and athletic director of the Georgetown football team, declined to comment on the situation.

When Georgetown and Andrews played in 2023, shots were fired in the parking lot outside Georgetown's football stadium. No one was injured, but the game was canceled and the stadium evacuated.

The incident sparked a debate about school safety, and the Georgetown County School District installed gun detection systems in its middle and high schools.

Despite the delay in the August 30 contest, the two schools were able to complete the game, with Andrews winning 38-10.

“We were a little shaky and made a few mistakes we shouldn't have made,” Durham said, though he thanked quarterback Brandon Cumbee and running back AJ Lee for stepping up for the team. “Those two guys can make a bad play look good, and they did that a couple of times tonight.”

Lee put Andrews on the scoreboard first when he broke free for a 73-yard touchdown run and also ran in the 2-point attempt that gave the Yellow Jackets an 8-0 lead with 5:16 left in the first quarter. Cumbee called his own number and ran in a 9-yard touchdown with 1:33 left in the first quarter, but the 2-point attempt was unsuccessful, making it 14-0 Andrews.

Cumbee followed up with another touchdown run, this time an 87-yard run that gave the Jackets a 22-0 lead after Cumbee's successful 2-point conversion run with 11:38 left in the second quarter.

Georgetown quarterback Zach Krause, who also serves as the team's kicker, put Georgetown on the scoreboard with a 38-yard field goal, cutting Andrews' lead to 22-3 with 7:06 left before halftime.

On the ensuing kickoff, Lee returned the ball to Georgetown's 1-yard line, and on the next play, Cumbee converted the ball from a yard out to give Andrews a 30-3 lead (the 2-point attempt was good).

In the third quarter, Cumbee hit Khalil Dorsey with a jump pass to extend the Jackets' lead to 38-3. With 10 seconds left in the quarter, Lee made a successful 2-point attempt.

The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown of the game when Kyandre McCray picked up a fumble from Andrews and returned it for a touchdown to cut the lead to 38-10 with 6 minutes to play.

“It feels good,” Cumbee said. “I feel like we went out there and executed our plays. I feel like we played hard. We didn't play our best, but we played pretty hard and I feel like we have a lot of work to do to get better. Then we have another big county game next week at Carvers Bay.”

Andrews (1-0) travels to Carvers Bay (1-1) on September 6th.

Georgetown (1-1), which won its first game since 2020 when it defeated Kingstree (0-2) in Week 0, hosts 2023 Class A runner-up Johnsonville (1-1) on Sept. 6.
