A 32-year-old woman attacked several people on a bus in Siegen. She injured five passengers with a knife.
Update, Saturday (31 August), 6.16 p.m.: According to the police, a 23-year-old victim is no longer in danger of dying. The man, however, remains in hospital. The condition of the other two men (19 and 21 years old) must still be described as life-threatening.
Update, Saturday (31 August), 8.13 a.m.: As police and prosecutors announced that night, six people were injured in the attack in Siegen. They are between 16 and 30 years old. Three people have already been released from hospital. Police and firefighters looked after the 36 bus passengers together with emergency chaplains. According to the press release, there is no evidence to date of a political or religious attack.
Knife attack on a bus in Siegen – three victims are in mortal danger
First report, Friday (30 August), 10.12 p.m.: Five people were injured in a knife attack on a bus in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Three of the victims are in critical condition, another person suffered serious injuries. As the Siegen-Wittgenstein district police announced in the evening, a 32-year-old woman was arrested as a suspect. “There is currently no further danger”, the police assured.
The incident occurred at around 7:40 p.m. when the bus, which was carrying at least 40 other passengers, was on its way to a city festival in Siegen. For reasons that are still unknown, the attack occurred, shocking the passengers and the local population.
The knife attack brings back memories of the incident in Solingen exactly one week earlier, in which a man attacked several people with a knife, killing three of them. Nevertheless, the Siegen-Wittgenstein police expressly stress that they should not jump to conclusions.
Crime scene cordoned off, investigations ongoing
“We ask citizens not to spread false information on social networks or other channels, and in particular not to make any reference to a terrorist attack.” “The police have no information on this,” said the official statement. The perpetrator is a German citizen.
In the evening, the police remained present at the crime scene. The area was cordoned off to secure evidence and question witnesses. The investigation into the exact sequence of events and the background to the crime is ongoing.
