Does the name Bass Reeves sound familiar? No wonder, because after the real lawman was simply ignored or even hushed up by the media for many decades, there have been several film and TV projects about this historical figure in recent years. Among other things, “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan produced the miniseries “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” as part of his mega-successful western franchise.
“Marshal Bass Reeves,” on the other hand, is an independent film. However, it also revolves around the former slave who became the first African-American law enforcement officer west of the Mississippi at the end of the 19th century and made an incredible number of arrests.
In the US, the indie title will be released in select cinemas in August 2022. “Marshal Bass Reeves” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 27, 2024. The director and the title role are from former “Grey's Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington. Together with Robert Johnson (“Red Stone”), who also plays a major role in front of the camera, Washington also wrote the screenplay, which embeds the real Reeves and his personal story in a fictional story.
Other important roles include Lew Temple from season 3 of “The Walking Dead,” 1990s star Stacey Dash (“Clueless”), and Noel Gugliemi from “Training Day” and “The Fast And The Furious.”

Thanks to his tireless efforts and excellent shooting skills as well as a talent for detective work, the former slave Bass Reeves (Washington) became the first African-American federal marshal west of the Mississippi in 1875 – a job he would hold for a period of 35 years.
The man the law enforcement officer is currently hunting is the notorious murderer Jack Donner (Temple). He and his ruthless gang terrorize the residents of the prairie town of Corsicana in order to get their hands on their oil-rich land. Reeves receives help from the local priest Sam Tanner (Johnson), who was once his partner before he found God…
