Jannik Sinner is in the round of 16 of the 2024 US Open after defeating Christopher O'Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. While the big names are faltering, the Italian is still on the rise.
Now either Gabriel Diallo or Tommy Paul will be the top seed to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open. In addition, Sinner remains the favorite to win the title next week.
The Italian ace is by far the best of all those left, with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic defeated on consecutive nights. But it won't be a third big name to fall, as he beat the world number 87, who was on a good run but was no match for Sinner.
However, he was flirting with the possibility of a draw after two fairly one-sided losses. The first set was really the defining one, as Sinner won it 6-1, barely losing a point on his own serve and breaking O'Connell's serve twice.
The second set was a little more even. O'Connell still couldn't attack Sinner's serve, no matter how hard he tried. However, this time it was more of an O'Connell show on serve, as he saw the threat from Sinner coming.
But as the saying goes, keeping the wolves at the last door applied to the set that Sünder won 6-2 when he broke O'Connel again to win the set and go through.
He is still the player to beat and, given the doping scandal that surrounds him, he may be able to step up his game this week to win a second Grand Slam title – one he will surely be the favorite to win.
