The 23-year-old American football player Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery. His team, the San Francisco 49ers, has issued an official statement on the matter.
In a statement, the police said Pearsall suffered a “gunshot wound to the chest” in the incident on Saturday, August 31, and is “in serious but stable condition.” Thoughts and prayers are being sent to the injured man and his entire family.
“FOX40” reported that the athlete was on his way to an autograph signing when the incident occurred. According to “People”, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) stated that the shooting took place on August 31st at around 3:40 p.m. in the area of Geary Street and Grant Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, “they found two male subjects with injuries.”
Both were taken to San Francisco General Hospital “for further evaluation.” A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had attempted to rob Pearsall. “During the attempted robbery, a physical altercation occurred, resulting in injuries to both the suspect and the victim,” the statement said. “The suspect is in custody and charges are currently pending.”
Mayor: “My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time”
The mayor of San Francisco, London Breed (50), announced via X (formerly Twitter): “San Francisco Police were immediately on the scene and arrested the shooter. My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time. We will provide further updates, including on his condition, as soon as we receive them.”
Pearsall was selected by the 49ers in the first round earlier this year and was the 31st pick in the NFL Draft. He previously played for the Arizona State Sun Devils before transferring to the University of Florida for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The wide receiver has not played in any preseason games in his first professional season due to a shoulder injury, NBC reported. The 49ers will open their season on Monday, Sept. 9, with a game against the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium.
