Saxony-Anhalt lags behind in digital vehicle registration

If you want to register or re-register your car, you can do so digitally in many places. However, some districts in Saxony-Anhalt do not yet offer the service. Usage is extremely low.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – The municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt are lagging far behind the rest of the country when it comes to digital vehicle registration. According to an overview by the Federal Ministry of Transport, only 6 of a total of 14 districts and independent cities in Saxony-Anhalt have the option of digital registration. This corresponds to just 42.9 percent of the districts. Nationwide, the figure is 87 percent. Only in the districts of Stendal, Salzwedel, Harz, Mansfeld-Südharz, Wittenberg and the Salzlandkreis is the technical option already available.

According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the internet-based vehicle registration (i-KfZ) was used 1.21 million times nationwide within a year. The leaders are Ingolstadt in Bavaria with a share of 21.1 percent and the district of Hildburghausen in Thuringia, where around one in five such administrative procedures (20.4 percent) are already carried out digitally. On average, five percent of all vehicle registrations are carried out digitally across Germany. In Saxony-Anhalt the share is 1.1 percent. Only in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Bremen is the share even lower. According to the city of Halle, the online service is currently not available because the city is preparing a comprehensive, necessary system change to expand the scope of the service.

Ministry sees benefits for vehicle owners

According to the information, the online service is most frequently used to decommission vehicles or to make name and address changes. Car owners can not only save time, but also money. The fees for registering a vehicle with a mouse click are lower than at the counter, it was said. Registering a car online costs 16.30 euros, at the counter 30.60 euros; decommissioning online costs 2.70 euros compared to 16.80 euros.

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) sees the process as an important step towards modernizing administration and easing the burden on citizens, authorities and companies. “This is digitalization in action, which noticeably makes people's everyday lives easier.” He appealed to a municipality that has not yet been connected to introduce this service. In addition, this service should be used more widely.
