Family destruction through drunk driving

Not only did their sister Katie cancel her wedding planned for Friday, but also the suspect Sean M. Higgins (43) was said to have been drunk at the time of the accident.

According to the New Jersey State Police, the suspected driver stated that he had already drunk a few beers before getting behind the wheel of his Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The man hit the two brothers on their bikes while overtaking, which went wrong. The impact was so severe that the two ice hockey players did not survive the accident.

The sister of the two deceased wanted to marry her fiancé Devin Joyce (26), also an ice hockey player, on Friday.

According to US media reports, Johnny and Matthew were listed as witnesses on the invitations. Johnny's wife Meredith was to be one of the bridesmaids.

In the middle of the preparations for what was probably the most beautiful day in Katie’s life, the terrible news of the two brothers’ deaths broke.

Johnny leaves behind his wife Meredith and two small children. His daughter Noa will turn two on September 30th, and his son Johnny Edward was not born until February 22nd, 2024.

Both will now have to grow up without their father and uncle. Matthew leaves behind his wife Madeline, both of whom only married in 2021.

The family issued a statement on Friday evening: “We want everyone to know that we are receiving your loving and supportive messages and we appreciate your thoughts and prayers. We continue to ask for your respect and privacy during this difficult time of grief,” they shared in a post on Instagram.

It will be a long time before the family can understand this misfortune.
