Saarbrücken – The fire brigade in Saarbrücken had a lot to do yesterday evening. The helpers had to respond to four incidents at the same time! The most spectacular: a vehicle fire on the city's motorway. At around 8.45 p.m., a family with three children was driving towards Völklingen in their Dacia Sandero. Shortly before the Saarbrücken-Gersweiler junction, the vehicle began to emit smoke. The driver pulled the car onto the hard shoulder at the Gersweiler Bridge, and all passengers were able to escape.
A short time later, the car was already engulfed in flames. The main operations center of the Saarbrücken fire department sent units from the professional fire department and volunteers to the scene of the fire. Even on the approach, a huge, jet-black column of smoke was visible from afar. The vehicle occupants were already being cared for by an ambulance crew when the fire department arrived.
The police park a patrol car in front of the scene and close off the motorway. The fire is quickly extinguished by the emergency services wearing breathing apparatus and using a jet pipe. However, all that remains of the car is a charred wreck. A tow truck has to remove it from the motorway. The police are now investigating what caused the fire. The extent of the damage is unknown, and the asphalt is also likely to have been damaged.
The full closure of the A 620 caused a traffic jam in the evening hours. While the fire was still being extinguished, additional emergency services were dispatched to a container fire, a helpless person in an apartment and a stuck elevator in which two people were still trapped. The professional fire brigade and volunteer fire brigade were also dispatched to these cases. Despite the large number of simultaneous reports, all operations went smoothly.
