Balasore (Odisha), Sept 1 (PTI) – A 46-year-old man was arrested for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old tribal girl in Balasore district of Odisha, police said on Sunday.
According to Remuna police superintendent Hasina Kulu, the girl disappeared from her home on August 27 and her decomposed body was discovered in an abandoned house on August 30.
The accused, Rabi Singh, was arrested on Saturday and is facing charges under various sections related to rape and murder, including sections 103, 165, 4(2) of the BNS Act and the POCSO Act, Kulu said, adding that he has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

“Investigations revealed that the accused is a friend of the victim's father and stayed at his house before the day of the crime. The next morning, the accused picked up the girl at a snack bar and took her to an abandoned house where he committed the crime. Later, he smashed her head with a piece of concrete slab,” the officer said.
BJD chairman and opposition leader Naveen Patnaik raised the issue in the assembly on Saturday and criticised the current government's handling of crime.
“All serious crimes, including this recent case, should be reported to the Prime Minister, who is also the Home Minister. This is a serious matter which has never happened during the tenure of my government,” Patnaik said.
