Some things make it, and some things notand that is the sad truth of the industry.”
The series, a reboot of Disney’s long-running Witch Mountain Franchise, itself based on Alexander Keys' 1968 novel Escape to Witch MountainHoward would have starred in the role of Audrey, a woman whose teenage daughter Tia develops strange psychic abilities. The Witch Mountain franchise has stalled
1975s Escape to Witch Mountain followed much the same plot as the novel, about two orphaned siblings who develop psychic powers and embark on a quest to escape the clutches of the evil billionaire Aristotle Bolt. Along the way, the two are aided by Jason O'Day, a widower who not only ensures the siblings' escape, but also helps them uncover their own extraterrestrial origins. The film was followed by two sequels in the form of 1978's Return from Witch Mountain and 1982 Beyond the Witch Mountainand a remake in 1995.
In 2009, another feature film reboot was produced with the title The race to Witch Mountainwhich starred Dwayne Johnson alongside AnnaSophia Robb, Carla Gugino, Ciarán Hinds, Alexander Ludwing, Gary Marshall, Tom Woodruff Jr. and Tom Everett Scott. The film received mostly mediocre reviews from critics and audiences alike, many of whom derided the film for its lack of spirit, although reviews for the cast and their performances were overwhelmingly positive. Although the film grossed over $106 million at the box office on a budget of just $50 million, talks of a sequel or another reboot did not arise until more than a decade after its release.
Escape to Witch Mountain is currently available to stream on Disney+.
