There are three types of markers on the map:
- Small orange markers indicate confirmed shooting reports in which no one was injured
- Large black markers indicate shootings in which someone was injured
- Large red markings indicate fatal shots
If police are unable to locate a victim, they will generally confirm a report of a shooting if they find other evidence at the scene, such as bullet casings or property damage.

While Berkeley itself does not have a gunshot detection system, other nearby law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland Police Department and the University of California Police Department, use these systems to determine whether actual gunfire was fired — or perhaps fireworks or some other type of explosion — and where the shooting occurred.
These systems sometimes provide useful information about shootings in Berkeley.
