Indian-origin doctor Ramesh Babu Peramsetty was shot dead on Friday, August 23, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Peramsetty comes from Tirupati district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and, according to several media reports, has headed several hospitals in the United States.
Peramsetty founded a group of medical professionals called the Crimson Care Network and served as its medical director.
The collective posted a message of condolence on Facebook regarding Peramsetty’s death.
“We respectfully ask that you keep the Peramsetty family and our team at Crimson Care Network in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this difficult time. Further statements will be released in the coming days and we remain committed to honoring Dr. Peramsetty's lasting legacy. Please be assured that our clinics will continue to operate without interruption and provide continuity of care to our community during this transition period,” it said.
Peramsetty specializes in emergency medicine and family medicine. According to his WebMD profile, he is a graduate of Sri Venkateswara Medical College and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Peramsetty has been celebrated for his extensive work during Covid-19 and has received numerous awards, such as Times now.
Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner said of Peramsetty's death: “I am simply devastated by the loss of one of my dearest and closest friends,” adding: “He had a heart of gold and his willingness to help others was unmatched. He loved this city, he loved his family and friends deeply and he cared for his patients as if they were all his family.”
Peramsetty's contributions to Tuscaloosa were so great that the city government renamed a street Peramsetty Avenue in his honor. Tuscaloosa News reported.
